Fascia is the thin band of connective tissue that wraps around and connects every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve and muscle. If your fascia tightens up, it can cause restrictions in the element that is surrounding or even somewhere else in the body often with painful consequences. Injury, overuse and other trauma and stress can lead to myofascial restrictions that can have a profound effect on the body.
By contrast, healthy, funtioning the fascia provides your body with structure and support. It is made of proteins (collagen and elastin) that give flexibility and strength, and it comprises several different layers: the superficial layer, situated immediately beneath the skin; the deep connective tissue membrane, which encases muscles and bones; and the visceral fascia, which suspends organs within their respective cavities.
